The problem with most electronic AWD systems is that they are reactive.  The system only applies the brake or clutch to transfer power to the other wheels after the problem wheel is already spinning free and the wheel speed sensor is triggered.  Mazda is preventing accidents with its i-Active AWD feature by being truly predictive.  Watch Kellie Sheetz from Wallace Mazda in Stuart, FL, give a quick summary of the benefits of the Mazda i-Active AWD system.

By constantly monitoring different factors around the vehicle, Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD is able to predict upcoming conditions, allocating engine torque to the necessary wheel to maintain control, stability and forward momentum.  The i-Active AWD system from Mazda monitors 27 sensors over 200 times per second to get a clear picture of outside driving conditions along with driver inputs to the braking and steering systems to predict upcoming conditions.  It is rare for the driver to ever feel any wheel slippage as the system has already adjusted to the driving conditions before the human body can ever detect anything is wrong.
